Answering the call: Seniors honored for military service commitment

Dozens of graduating seniors from across Northwest Washington took the Oath of Enlistment on Saturday at Stanwood High School, marking the beginning of their journey of service to our country.

We were honored to host the inaugural Our Community Salutes of Northwest Washington ceremony, recognizing members of the Class of 2026 who have chosen to serve in the United States Armed Forces after graduation.

Students from Stanwood, Snohomish, Arlington, Lake Stevens, Marysville-Getchell, Monroe, and Kamiak high schools were celebrated alongside their families, friends, recruiters, veterans, military organizations, community leaders, and supporters from across the region. The event featured a community resource fair, ceremonial support from the Sons of the American Revolution, and special guests including Miss Washington, who joined in recognizing and celebrating the students' commitment to service.

A highlight of the ceremony was hearing from SHS Principal Mike Washington, who served 20 years in the U.S. Navy. Washington shared reflections on leadership, commitment, and service while helping honor students who are choosing a military path after graduation. Additional speakers included Lieutenant Colonel Natassia Cherne, commander of the 361st Recruiting Squadron at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, and Stanwood City Council member and retired Navy Master Chief Petty Officer Robert "Chili" Hicks.

As the first event of its kind in Northwest Washington, we hope Saturday's ceremony is the beginning of a meaningful annual tradition that continues to grow in the years ahead. A special thank you to Our Community Salutes Northwest Washington, the event organizers, military recruiters, guest speakers, volunteers, community partners, and the many families who helped make this event possible.

Most importantly, thank you to the students who have answered the call to serve. We are grateful for your commitment, inspired by your dedication, and proud to celebrate this important milestone as you prepare to begin your next chapter.
